The Roots, for The New Yorker

The weight of it all, had grown
with such dimension and magnitude.
Trying to focus on the borders,
the horizon of it all,
would leave one blind and disoriented.
Too large to see, too heavy to hold.
Too invested, as the two gripped tenaciously
at it’s reins.
The tension at the clasp of their fingers,
burning deep into skin with fear,
slipping at the knuckles in clammy uncertainty.
Hold tight for the sake of us.
Hold tight for the sake of it all.
Close your eyes and ignore the overbearing presence,
and focus on a false sense of complacency.
Blindly persevere.
Don’t let go, because of all that was invested.
Don’t let go, in hope of potential happiness.
Don’t let go, for we know nothing else to hold on to.
Arrogance failing reason…
